On April 3rd, College of Liberal Arts hosted a talk by Mr. Graeme Todd, an English Department lecturer, on avoiding common mistakes in IELTS writing and speaking. Mr. Todd, an experienced IELTS instructor, has extensive experience helping students achieve high scores on this proficiency test. The event was organized by Mr. David Wei Hung Wu, the EMI project coordinator.<\/p>

Mr. Todd began by outlining the IELTS writing Band Descriptions, highlighting key points and criteria for students to focus on. In the second part, he shifted the focus to analyzing writing Task 2 questions, particularly what examiners expect students to answer. By breaking down sample questions, he showed students how to identify and address the main points, ensuring clear and accurate responses.<\/p>

The final section emphasized the importance of writing structure, a fundamental concept covered in introductory writing courses ( a.k.a. Writing 101). Mr. Todd explained topic sentences, thesis statements, and supporting details in a clear and accessible way, particularly useful and benificial for students without an English major background.<\/p>

Overall, this informative session provided a solid foundation for writing effectively in IELTS Task 2. Mr. Todd\u2019s engaging presentation delivered valuable insights to the students.
