【代公告】~3/20上午10:30-12:00頂尖學術講座- 語言如何運作?深度學習時代的挑戰與機遇

03/20 臺師大頂尖學術講座– How does language work? Challenges and opportunities in the age of deep learning

Harald Baayen (德國圖賓根大學語言學教授、歐洲科學院院士)

講題簡介:

Advances in computer science have transformed our understanding of how language works. From early models conceptualizing language as a calculus of discrete units and rules to the resurgence of artificial neural networks, these developments challenge traditional linguistic theories. Modern deep learning networks, with their billions of parameters, achieve remarkable performance in tasks like translation and question-answering, raising the question: Are they the new model for language? The lecture will explore the implications of large language models for foundational concepts in linguistics, their cognitive limitations, and their potential as statistical tools to uncover how language is used and learned. Examples will include predicting English determiners, tonal variations in Taiwan Mandarin, and word pronunciation timing in Estonian.

NTNU Distinguished Lecture Series- How does language work? Challenges and opportunities in the age of deep learning
