Osaka University (also called the University of Osaka or Handai), is a public research university located in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. It was one of Imperial Universities in Japan, one of the Designated National University and selected as a Top Type university of Top Global University Project by the Japanese government. It is usually ranked among the top three public universities in Japan, along with the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University. It is ranked third overall among Japanese universities and 71st worldwide in the 2020 QS World University Rankings. Osaka University was the sixth modern university in Japan at its founding in 1931. Osaka University is organized into 11 faculties for undergraduate programs and 16 graduate schools. The Letters in Osaka University can be traced back to Kaitokudo in the Edo period. The school of Letters was established in 1948, with 3 departments (Philosophy, History, and Literature) and 14 lectures, which currently has 20 programs. At present, the school of Letters preserves the precious collection books, valuable materials, and electronic databases of the Kaitokudo Library, which is the precious materials of Osaka’s academic development and business ethics during the 140 years in the Edo period. | ||
